Susan Hellauer, founding member of the acclaimed women’s vocal ensemble Anonymous 4, returns to Boston for a weekend exploration of Sarum chant. The Rite or Use of Sarum (the Latin name for Salisbury) was Britain’s own variation of the Roman liturgy throughout the Middle Ages until the Reformation. While many Sarum chants were also sung elsewhere in Christian Europe, Sarum Chant is a distinct and distinctive melodic dialect, and includes many compositions unique to the British Isles.
After Susan reviews medieval chant mode theory and practice, we will learn and sing several of these works from votive masses to the Virgin Mary from 13th-/14th-century British sources. The workshop will culminate in a performance of a Sarum plainchant “Ladymass,” with interpolations of 13th-century polyphony.
When fans ask members of Anonymous 4 why these talented women sing so many works in honor of Mary, Susan tells them: “because she got the best music!” And now we get to sing it too!
